The Blank-Check Boom: Are Spacs Here for the Long Term?

A Special Purpose Acquisition Company (SPAC) or "blank check company" raises money through an IPO that will eventually fund a merger/acquisition of a private company. By default, the private company that the SPAC bought will become public on the market. When investors buy SPAC shares, which are typically inexpensive, they will not know what company they are investing in until after the M&A deal is announced. The combination of inexpensive shares and the high risk of not knowing your underlying investment, leaves room for potentially enormous gains or losses.

This type of investing has been present since 2016 however the multi-billion dollar deals that started the"blank-check boom" happened in early 2021, February 2021 generating a massive $54.4 Billion across 177 deals. Some investors are willing to use their large risk appetite to potentially generate 20-30% returns over the course of a few short months post-IPO while others may criticize this type of investing. Regardless, SPACs have proven to generate an enormous amount of funds and attention from all market players including celebrities like Alex Rodriguez.

In this presentation we will explore how to:
  • Use Bloomberg Equity tools to identify newly announced SPACs, their current market value, and how to search for tickers using our own screening criteria
  • Identify major trends in the SPAC world based on geography and sector
  • Review the major differences between buying a SPAC share and a standard IPO share
