Bloomberg Finance Labs are equipping Indian B-Schools students with real-world finance skills and experience

As India aims to achieve its target of becoming a $5Trillon-economy by 2030, there is an unprecedented demand for well-educated and employable talent to actualize that goal. Over the past decade, more than 2500 Business Schools have come up in the country. And as these institutions strive for excellence, some of them are benchmarking themselves with the top business schools of the world.

With a growing demand for trained finance professionals, a lot of the top business schools in India are seeing value in setting up Bloomberg Finance Labs on their campus. Bloomberg’s key offerings for business schools bring the financial markets directly into the classroom, empowering students with a competitive edge. Most of India’s leading institutes now have a Bloomberg Finance Lab on their campus, through which students have access to the same platform used by the world’s leading banks, corporations and government agencies to enhance their academic studies across a wide range of disciplines.

There are over 25 Bloomberg Finance Labs in Indian Business Schools now, with the largest labs housed at NL Dalmia Institute of Management Studies and Research, Mumbai and Woxsen University, Hyderabad.

Starting in 1982, Bloomberg revolutionised the finance industry by bringing Data, News, Analytics and Insight to the desktops of financial leaders via a network that delivered information instantly all over the globe. With a huge data and news-gathering operation, research analysts, as powerful calculators, the Bloomberg Terminal is found on the desktops of more than 325,000 of the world’s financial and industrial leaders – and today, in Business School classrooms.

The Annual Bloomberg EduTech Forum Series across key Indian cities draws participation from some of the top Business Schools of the country. One key message that emanated from the forum over the years is that Edutech — the fusion of education and technology — is revolutionizing the way Indian Business Schools are teaching, allowing them to leverage digital tools to bridge gaps and empower learners of all ages and backgrounds.

ICFAI Business School, Hyderabad is one of the Indian business schools that has recently opened a Bloomberg Finance Lab at their campus, and in the process of discovering the unmatched value that it offers both students and faculty members.

“We chose Bloomberg over others as we felt that it is truly a powerful, agile and flexible tool that syncs well with not only our Finance and Accounting department’s objectives but also fits well with the overall goals, strategy and aspirations of IBS Hyderabad to provide contemporary and cutting-edge knowledge to the students and enhance their analytical skills by exposing them to changing finance and business environment,” says Dr. D Satish, Head of Department – Finance & Accounting, ICFAI Business School, Hyderabad.

The Bloomberg Lab on their campus has given them the opportunity to expand the research into emerging areas as well as conduct cross-country studies. “We are strengthening our curriculum around Bloomberg and working with industry partners to improve and enhance the career prospects of our students who now have an opportunity to spend considerable time understanding companies and industries across countries, following business and finance news on the Bloomberg terminal,” adds Dr. Satish.

A similar sentiment is shared by Professor Syed Hasan Jafar, Associate Processor & Area Chair of Finance, Woxsen University. “Bloomberg helps students learn from simulated market environments which gives the students a real feel of how markets could be in reality. Learning how to use Bloomberg will likely open up an array of possibilities for students to compete in today’s financial market by having a competitive advantage over others. Financial modeling and technical analysis of different levels are possible on Bloomberg. There are predefined models and tools available on the platform to take the student’s knowledge about finance, stocks, etc. to an unimaginable next level,” he explains.

One of the newest Bloomberg Finance Labs in India have been opened by IES Management College and Research Centre with the aim of providing their students and faculty with cutting-edge resources that will empower them to thrive in a rapidly evolving landscape. “This state-of-the-art facility is designed to prepare the leaders of tomorrow to navigate the complexities of our ever-changing financial world,” said Sameer Tamhane, Chairman IES MCRC.

What makes the Bloomberg Finance Lab invaluable to both the Business School and the Students though, is the way recruiters from finance firms view graduates who are familiar with using the Bloomberg Terminal.

According to Brooke Coby, Head of Campus Recruitment, RBS Global Banking, “Students who graduate with Bloomberg experience gain a huge advantage in the early stages of their career.”
