Columbia UniversityGlobal assets under management (AuM) reached $147 trillion in 2025, an 11% year-over-year increase. These assets are managed through data processing, security selection, allocation, portfolio construction, and risk-management frameworks that may not remain stable over time. When models are temporally unstable or optimization objectives are misaligned, the problem does not disappear; it becomes embedded in the asset-management process. In this talk, we discuss several such cases, visually explain the underlying phenomena, and suggest possible solutions. Ultimately, what is under the hood matters.
