At the halfway point between the COP 28 and COP 29 Climate Change Conferences, Bloomberg Intelligence and Bloomberg LP are pleased to host leading experts from the public and private sector in a series of discussions on the progress made since Dubai and the progress still to be made in Baku and beyond. We will look at the role the oil & gas industry can play in the transition, following a historical COP 28 deal to phase out fossil fuels, key decisions on funding an orderly & just transition that will be made at COP 29 (already dubbed the "Finance COP"), and a look at the intersection of climate and biodiversity. Dr. Kate Calvin

Chief Scientist and Senior Climate Advisor

Dr. Katherine Calvin was appointed as NASA’s Chief Scientist and Senior Climate Advisor to Administrator Bill Nelson on Jan. 10, 2022. As chief scientist, Calvin advises agency leadership on the agency’s science programs and science-related strategic planning and investments. As senior climate advisor, she provides insights recommendations for the agency’s climate-related science, technology, and infrastructure programs. Calvin will serve in this capacity under the Intergovernmental Personnel Act Mobility Program, which provides for the temporary assignment of personnel between the federal government and state and local governments, colleges and universities, Indian tribal governments, federally funded research and development centers, and other eligible organizations. Since 2008, Calvin has been an Earth scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) in College Park, Maryland. She worked in JGCRI’s Global Change Analysis Model, a system for exploring and analyzing the relationships between human and Earth systems in the context of global climate change. She also worked on the Department of Energy’s Energy Exascale Earth System Model, a system for analyzing the past, present, and future state of the Earth system. Her research simulates the interaction between global resources, focusing on the impact of land, water, and energy use through an environmental and socioeconomic lens. Calvin has co-authored over 150 publications. Her recent publications have investigated growing populations against agriculture and water scarcity in the face of climate change. In July 2023, Calvin was selected as Co-Chair of Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the 7th assessment cycle. She has contributed to previous IPCC reports, including two special reports, the Working Group III report, and the synthesis report. Calvin also served on a National Academy of Sciences research committee on models of the world, which was commissioned by the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency to create models for interrelated global systems such as economics, politics, and environment. She contributed to the third U.S. National Climate Assessment. Calvin received her doctorate in Management, Science, and Engineering from Stanford University and a bachelor of science in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Maryland.

David Craig

Co-chair, Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD)

David has 30 years of experience in financial markets data, analytics and technology and is seen as a leading expert in the data and market infrastructure required to drive sustainable markets. David Craig is the Co-Chair of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) and Advisory Board member of the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) launched by His Majesty King Charles III. He is a member of the IAPB (International Advisory Panel for Biodiversity Credits) leading the work on measurement and has led numerous projects and groups with TheCityUK and the World Economic Forum on global finance, innovation and technology. David was the former founder and CEO of Refinitiv, one of the largest data and technology platform providers to financial markets operating in over 160 countries. Following the acquisition of Refinitiv by London Stock Exchange Group for $27B in 2021, he become head of LSEG’s Data and Analytics Division. He was previously founder and CEO of the Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) business and head of strategy at Thomson Reuters and Reuters plc. Prior to these roles he spent 8 years as a partner at McKinsey focusing on technology and financial services clients, and was a software developer for American Management Systems. David is a private investor in natural capital technology firms, Board Advisor and chairs the Triple Private Equity Investment Committee of. He is a director of the Green Finance Institute PMO, and is a Trustee at the Natural History Museum supporting Innovation and Data.

Brad Crabtree

Assistant Secretary

U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management

Mr. Brad Crabtree is the Assistant Secretary for the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE's) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM), where he leads and directs FECM’s research and development programs.

Mr. Crabtree brings nearly three decades of experience in energy and climate policy to his role as Assistant Secretary. Prior to joining DOE, he served as Vice President for Carbon Management at the Great Plains Institute (GPI), where he cofounded and directed the Carbon Capture Coalition, which works to advance carbon management technologies to meet climate goals, create high-wage jobs, and support domestic energy and industrial production.

At GPI, Mr. Crabtree also helped launch the bipartisan State Carbon Capture Work Group to foster deployment of carbon capture and carbon dioxide transport infrastructure, and he led GPI’s efforts to establish the Industrial Innovation Initiative aimed at decarbonizing key industries. Additionally, he co-directed Powering the Plains, a project that crafted a comprehensive 50-year regional blueprint for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and carbon capture.

Mr. Crabtree previously coordinated energy policy advisory groups for the Midwestern Governors Association and facilitated the Midwestern Greenhouse Gas Reduction Accord Advisory Group for six governors and the premier of Manitoba. He has also led multiple overseas delegations of U.S. policymakers and private sector leaders to examine other countries’ policies and experience in carbon management and renewable energy technology.

A North Dakota native, Mr. Crabtree is a graduate of the Georgetown School of Foreign Service and has an MA in history from Johns Hopkins University.

Rob Du Boff is a senior analyst for Bloomberg Intelligence, focusing on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) research. He is a also a product manager for Bloomberg's recently released ESG Governance Scores.

He joined BI from JUST Capital, a non-profit that ranks the largest U.S. public companies on ESG priorities. Previously, he worked for over a decade on Wall Street as an equity research analyst, most recently as a senior oil & gas analyst at Oppenheimer & Co. He also worked at Millennium Partners and Merrill Lynch covering energy, basic resources, and retail.

Rob holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Chicago and an MBA in finance and accounting from NYU’s the Leonard N. Stern School of Business. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation.

Colin le Duc

Colin le Duc is a Founding Partner of Generation Investment Management. Generation was established in 2004 as a dedicated sustainable investor. Colin is head of the firm’s San Francisco office and focuses primarily on Generation’s Private Markets businesses. He also serves as Vice Chair of Just Climate, a Generation business dedicated to climate-led investing. Prior to co-founding Generation Investment Management, he worked for Sustainable Asset Management in Zurich (now owned by Robeco), Arthur D. Little in London and TotalEnergies in Paris. Colin serves on the board of the Ocean Conservancy. During her more than 40-year career with Oxy, Vicki has held a variety of management and technical positions with responsibilities on three continents, including roles in the United States, Russia, Venezuela and Ecuador. Most recently, she served as Oxy’s President and Chief Operating Officer, overseeing the company’s oil and gas, chemical and midstream operations. Vicki previously was Senior Executive Vice President, Oxy, and President, Oxy Oil and Gas, where she was responsible for operations in the U.S., the Middle East region and Latin America. Prior to that, she held a variety of leadership positions, including Executive Vice President, Oxy, and President, Oxy Oil and Gas, Americas; Vice President, Oxy, and Executive Vice President, U.S. Operations, Oxy Oil and Gas; Executive Vice President, California Operations; and President and General Manager of the company’s Permian Basin operations. Vicki started her career at Cities Service, which was acquired by Oxy. Vicki serves on the boards of Lockheed Martin and the American Petroleum Institute. Ben Jealous

Ben Jealous He has worn various hats throughout his career, transitioning seamlessly from organizer and investigative journalist to holding the presidency of two prominent organizations dedicated to championing equity, justice, and the safeguarding of democracy and the environment. Notably, he has been appointed as the Executive Director of the Sierra Club. Ben served as the 17th President of the NAACP from 2008-2013. He was the youngest person ever appointed to lead America's oldest, largest, and most impactful civil rights organization. He led the unparalleled institution through a period of growth not seen in decades. Under Ben's leadership the NAACP played critical roles in electing and re-electing president Obama, securing LGBTQ marriage equality in multiple states, repelling state-level assaults on voting rights throughout the South and Midwest, passing the DREAM Act in Maryland, reducing the prison populations of Georgia and Texas, and abolishing the death penalty in six states in five years. As a young organizer in Mississippi, Ben was trained by Dr. James Anderson an ally and former college classmate of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. Anderson taught Ben the secret MLK taught him for transforming a democracy: If you are comfortable in your coalition, your coalition is too small. That lesson has been at the heart of Ben's work for more than a quarter century. Along the way he has not only worked with noted human rights leaders like Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Stacey Abrams to help bend the arc of the moral universe towards justice. He has also worked with noted conservatives Newt Gingrich and Grover Norquist to forge bi-partisan consensus to end mass incarceration and Republican governors from California to Virginia to win critical civil rights victories for formerly incarcerated people. A best-selling author and compelling storyteller, Ben's next book will be published by Harper Collins in December 2022. Entitled, Never Forget Our People Were Always Free: A Parable of American Healing. Kelly is also Co-Director of the Systems Change Lab, which monitors, learns from and accelerates the transformational change required to protect people and the planet. Before coming to the Earth Fund, Kelly spent 12 years at the World Resources Institute, where she was the Director of Tracking and Strengthening Climate Action in WRI’s global climate program. Kelly holds a PhD and Master of Environmental Management from Yale’s School of Environment and a B.A. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Yale College.

Ben Macdonald

Ben Macdonald has extensive experience in the financial industry, starting with JPMorgan Chase in 1999 as a Vice President working in interest rate derivative exotics. Ben then moved to Goldman Sachs in 2004 before joining Bloomberg LP in 2006. At Bloomberg LP, they held various roles, including Global Head of Fixed Income and Global Head of Enterprise Products. Ben also served as the CEO of Bloomberg Tradebook LLC and as a Board Member at Bloomberg MTF. Currently, they are the Managing Principal of CMSI at Bloomberg Philanthropies, where they lead initiatives to accelerate efforts towards reaching net zero by 2050. Ben has also held leadership positions in BTF BV and chaired the Bloomberg Index Services Limited oversight committee. Ben Macdonald attended Lancaster University from 1991-1996, studying Business Administration and Management. Ben then went on to complete their MBA at emlyon business school from 1996-1997, also focusing on Business Administration and Management.

Nazmeera Moola

Nazmeera is the Chief Sustainability Officer at Ninety One. In this role, she oversees our firm-wide initiatives, including our commercial imperatives, investment integration, and our inhabit and advocacy work. Prior to this she was Head of SA Investments, where she worked across our public and private strategies in Africa. Before that she was co-Head of SA & Africa Fixed Income. Nazmeera has covered the macro-economy in South Africa and other emerging markets since 2000. She is passionate about making financial markets work to support development. Her remit has included the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund, which provides debt financing for infrastructure projects across Africa. She joined the firm in 2013 from Macquarie First South where she was Head of Macro Strategy. She began her career as an economist at Merrill Lynch in South Africa and London. Nazmeera graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Business Science degree and is a CFA® Charterholder.

Minister Susana Muhamad

Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia

María Susana Muhamad González is a Colombian politician with Palestinian roots. With a major in political science, she is a well-known environmentalist and belongs to the political party Colombia Humana. Since August 7th, 2022 she is the current Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development of Colombia. In 2012, during Gustavo Petro´s period as Mayor of Bogotá she was appointed Secretary of the Environment and a year later in 2013 she became Secretary General of the Mayor's Office. In 2019 she was elected Councilor of Bogotá, a position she held until the first half of 2022. Muhamad has a major in Political Science from the Universidad de los Andes and a master's degree in Planning & Management of Sustainable Development from the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. Later, she worked as a Sustainable Development Consultant for Shell Global Solutions International in The Hague, the Netherlands. In 2021, Muhamad was elected vice president of the national coordination board for the political party Colombia Humana, once this political movement officially received its legal status. Muhamad is an acknowledged environmentalist both in Colombia and abroad, and her efforts are directed to consolidate Colombia as a world power of life, through compliance with international agreements on climate change and loss of biodiversity, protection of environmental defenders and the fight against deforestation in the Amazon region.

Marina Severinovsky

Marina Severinovsky is the Head of Sustainability, North America, and leads the sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) integration for Schroders investments in North America. She collaborates with senior managers on market strategy, client communications, product development, sales, and investor management. Marina was previously the Investment Director for North America for the Quantitative Equity Products (QEP) team from 2020 and was responsible for communicating QEP’s investment policy and strategy with clients, as well as business management in the Americas. Prior to joining the QEP team, Marina was an Investment Strategist from 2016 to 2019, working in partnership with Hartford Funds to represent Schroders strategies to financial advisors and intermediaries across all client channels, primarily in the Central US region. Marina was an Alternatives Specialist at Schroders from 2010 to 2016, which involved supporting the development of Schroders’ Alternatives business in the Americas. Her product management activities covered multiple strategies, including Commodities, Absolute Return Emerging Market Debt and Insurance Linked Securities. Marina joined Schroders in 2010 and is based in New York. Prior to joining Schroders, she was an Associate in Investment Banking at Citi Capital Markets and Banking from 2008 to 2010, which involved supporting buy- and sell-side mergers and acquisitions, equity and debt transactions, and fairness opinions for a broad range of corporate clients in the Healthcare and Tech, Media & Telecom coverage groups. She was a Consultant and Client Relationship Manager at Digital Mandate, LLC from 2005 to 2007, which involved providing legal technology, process consulting, and technology optimization solutions to large law firms and corporate legal departments. Val Smith

Val Smith was appointed Citi’s first Chief Sustainability Officer in 2019 and has helped grow sustainability efforts at Citi since 2004. She oversees Citi’s Sustainability & ESG team, with responsibility for the bank’s Sustainable Progress Strategy and priority initiatives, including the $1 Trillion Sustainable Finance Goal. Val is leading the development of Citi’s Net Zero Emissions by 2050 plan. She also leads Citi’s implementation of the Principles for Responsible Banking and guides its climate risk disclosure. Val is an advisor and spokesperson on sustainable finance, Taskforce on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) disclosure, stakeholder engagement, human rights, ESG integration and sustainability trends.Prior to joining Citi, Val spent a decade working in the environmental sector, including the National Audubon Society, Brainerd Foundation, and the Houston Advanced Research Center. She began her career with the United States Peace Corps, where she served for two years as an environmental specialist in Honduras.She serves on the board of Net Impact and is a member of the UNEP FI Global Steering Committee and the Aspen Institute Business & Society Leaders Forum. Val earned her MBA from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and her BA in Environmental Science from the University of Virginia. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and two sons.

He then joined TOTAL where he held numerous positions over the course of his nine years with the Group, including : responsible for TOTAL’s R&D programme on alternative fuels, head of the environment department in an oil & gas refinery, sustainable development leader for new energies, etc. Just prior to joining BNP Paribas, he spent over four years as director in charge of energy transition at Deloitte.

Bjørn Otto Sverdrup

Chair, Oil & Gas Climate Initiative Executive Committee

Bjørn Otto Sverdrup was appointed chair of OGCI’s Executive Committee in 2021. Sverdrup is also a non-voting member of the board of OGCI Climate Investment. Sverdrup brings over 20 years’ energy industry leadership experience to OGCI. He has had a long career at Norwegian energy company Equinor, most recently as Senior Vice President for Corporate Sustainability. Sverdrup is on the Climate Advisory Board of Norges Bank Investment Management, which manages one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds. He is also a TED speaker, as well as a guest lecturer at Imperial College, Columbia and Harvard Business School.

Patricia graduated as an economist and has done various post-graduate courses, including corporate finance, enterprise selling, corporate governance and negotiation.
