Roughly 4 trillion cubic meters of fresh water are withdrawn each year for agricultural, industrial and municipal uses, but with freshwater demand up to 40% greater than supply by 2030, according to the Global Commission on the Economics of Water, water risk is on the rise. Water risk is already presenting challenges to the agriculture, power, mining and tech sectors. Desalination and wastewater treatment companies, therefore, stand to benefit from increased interest in their technologies, as do the hundreds of water tech startups that have collectively raised $2.6 billion in venture capital and private equity investment since 2016. In this AskBNEF session, BNEF’s Head of Technology & Industry Claire Curry will be joined by BNEF’s Stephanie Díaz, Senior Associate, and Bloomberg Intelligence’s Melanie Rua, Senior ESG Associate, to discuss how water will impact business opportunities as the climate gets more erratic.
