This will be followed by Tony Saich, Daewoo Professor of International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School, who will discuss how the Congress will affect the world and how an emboldened President Xi may affect global policies.
This session will conclude with a panel discussion and audience Q&A moderated by Simon Male, an Equity Market Specialist Bloomberg. The panel will feature Chris and Tony as well as Andy Rothman, Investment Strategist at Matthews Asia and Tom Orlik, Chief Economist at Bloomberg Economics, on how to form your China investment strategy.

An accomplished Asian affairs specialist, Chris spent nearly two decades serving in the United States Government’s intelligence and foreign affairs communities. In addition to his work advising multinational corporations on their business and commercial strategies in China and greater East Asia, his insights on the Chinese leadership and on Beijing’s economic, commercial, foreign and security policies are regularly sought by senior Administration, Congressional, military, and foreign government officials. Chris graduated summa cum laude with bachelor’s degrees in history and political science from the University of California, San Diego and received his master’s degree in Security Policy Studies from the George Washington University.

Andy Rothman is an Investment Strategist at Matthews Asia. He is principally responsible for developing research focused on China’s ongoing economic and political developments while also complementing the broader investment team with in-depth analysis on Asia. In addition, Andy plays a key role in communicating to clients and the media the firm’s perspectives and latest insights into China and the greater Asia region. Prior to joining Matthews Asia in 2014, Andy spent 14 years as CLSA’s China macroeconomic strategist where he conducted analysis into China and delivered his insights to their clients. Previously, Andy spent 17 years in the U.S. Foreign Service, with a diplomatic career focused on China, including as head of the macroeconomics and domestic policy office of the U.S. Embassy in Beijing. In total, Andy has lived and worked in China for more than 20 years. He earned an M.A. in public administration from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and a B.A. from Colgate University. He is a proficient Mandarin speaker.

Tony Saich is the Daewoo Professor of International Affairs, Harvard Kennedy School. As the Director of the Rajawali Foundation Institute for Asia, he oversees programs in China, Indonesia and Vietnam. His current research focuses on politics and governance in post-Mao China and philanthropy in China. His most recent book is From Rebel to Ruler. One Hundred Years of the Chinese Communist Party (2021). He is a guest professor at the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University, China. He is a Board Member of AMC LLC and advises a wide range of government, private, and nonprofit organizations on work in greater Asia. He holds a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Letters, University of Leiden, the Netherlands. He received his master’s degree in politics with special reference to China from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University, and his bachelor’s degree in politics and geography from the University of Newcastle, UK.

Simon joined Bloomberg in June 2022 as an Equity Market Specialist, and works with Bloomberg customers to enhance their equity workflows. Prior to Bloomberg, Simon specialised in Asian equity markets as a portfolio manager in Hong Kong with LGT Asset Management and an institutional equity salesman in New York with BNP Paribas, Auebach Grayson, and Mizuho. He graduated from Oxford University with a BA in Modern History and Economics.

Tom Orlik is Bloomberg’s Chief Economist, based in Washington DC. Previously, Tom was the Chief Asia economist for Bloomberg and China economics correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, based in Beijing. Prior to eleven years in China, he was an advisor to the UK Executive Director of the International Monetary Fund and policy analyst at the British Treasury and European Commission. He is the author of Understanding China’s Economic Indicators and China: The Bubble that Never Pops.
