To mark the launch of Bloomberg’s UK Policy Series, we are delighted to present a recording of the keynote address by Gwyneth Nurse, Director General of Financial Services at HM Treasury.

Recorded live from our European headquarters in London watch to hear her priorities for financial services as the UK reshapes its regulatory framework post-Brexit. Gwyneth also shared her vision for sharpening the City’s competitive edge, as well as her thoughts on setting standards for global financial markets.

The speech was  followed by a fireside chat and Q&A moderated by Joe McHale,  Head of Regulatory Affairs for EMEA and APAC.

Gwyneth took up the role of Director General, Financial Services at HM Treasury in January 2022. As Director General Gwyneth is responsible for leading the delivery of HM Treasury’s work to promote stability, fairness, efficiency and competitiveness in financial services. Gwyneth’s previous role was Director of Financial Services, which she moved to after being Deputy Director of the Banking and Credit team and an earlier role as Deputy Director of the Assets, Savings and Wealth team. Before joining the Treasury in 2003, Gwyneth worked for HM Revenue & Customs, where she qualified as a Tax Inspector and then worked in tax policy.

Joe McHale is Head of European Government and Regulatory Affairs at Bloomberg in London where he is responsible for analysing and responding to financial services reforms impacting Bloomberg and its clients. Since taking up his role in 2016, Joe's main focus has been on EMIR and MIFID II implementation, the Capital Markets Union initiative, the sustainable finance agenda and Bloomberg's response to the UK's withdrawal from the EU. Prior to Bloomberg, Joe worked for Deutsche Bank in London and headed the capital markets team in its Regulatory Affairs Department. Prior to Deutsche, Joe spent six years working in Brussels; first as a regulatory consultant for clients on EU legislation and then as a policy expert at the European Banking Federation where he advocated on EU financial markets legislation adopted in the wake of the financial crisis.
